Gas Tanks

This project was started originally to replace the sender unit which no longer functioned properly. But taking down the tanks also afforded the opportunity to address an annoying problem that is common in the GMC Classic: blow-back when filling the tanks at a gas station.

Here one of the tanks has just been removed from the coach. The silver disk in the center is the sender unit pulled out for inspection...it's history!

The tank has been cleaned and the top coated with a cold zinc galvanizing spray. It is now ready for the new sender unit to be installed.

The new sender unit is put in place...

And the tank sits on a transmission jack ready to be lifted into place and attached to the coach.

The vent line for the gas tank is supposed to lay in a groove on top of the tank. This one didn't, squashed between the top of the tank and the bottom of the coach, rendering it absolutely useless.

This was probably done during some prior installation, but didn't show up as a big problem until gas stations started using high volume pumps. A simple solution, an adhesive patch, kept the vent line in its groove this time as the tank was put back in place....

Didn't solve the pumping problem completely but certainly helped.
